Project
The mission of The ALS Association, Greater Los Angeles Chapter is to provide significant and meaningful assistance in the lives of all persons with ALS, their families, caregivers and health professionals in Los Angeles and its surrounding counties; and to support research for a cure. ALSALA is the central source for services and education for PALS (persons living with ALS), their families, caregivers, and health care professionals. Their quarterly newsletter was in need of an improved apperance giving ASLALA the ability to reach out to a larger audience of donors and resources for the chapter.

Background
After reviewing ALSALA’s needs and goals with its Director of Development, Heim agreed that their quarterly newsletter most urgently needed his help. Approximately 25,000 copies of “The Messenger” are distributed in the greater Los Angeles area, making it the main form of outreach to the ALS community as well as its primary public relations vehicle.

Design Solution
Streamline the design and layout to increase legibility, generate enthusiasm for ALS support and research, and raise the association’s profile in a competitive market for cause-related dollars.

Results
Since Rian Design partnered with them, the ALSALA has announced a major initiative to serve members and their families: the Center of Excellence at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, scheduled to open at the end of 2006. With this huge step forward, Los Angeles will finally join the ranks of other major U.S.-metro areas in providing the high level of care that only a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary program can. The revamping of The Messenger proved a key component in turning this three-year, multi-million dollar dream into a reality—the best possible ending to a great design story.
